Andrew Smith speaks during Yom Hashoah Morning Meeting
April 23, 2019: Bob Gaining introduces the Morning Meeting topic presented by Yom Hashoah speaker Andrew Smith. His mother was a Holocaust survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto, who was very active in the Holocaust survivor community. Her story and personal testimony is part of a permanent exhibit at the Imperial War Museum in London.
The full name of the day commemorating the victims of the Holocaust is “Yom Hashoah Ve-Hagevurah" – literally the “Day of (Remembrance of) the Holocaust and the Heroism.” It is marked on the 27th day in the month of Nisan — a week after the seventh day of Passover, and a week before Yom HaziKaron (Memorial Day for Israel’s fallen soldiers).
Mr. Smith, over the last 40 years, has been an academic, mentor, and practitioner in the field of finance. He was a research fellow and lecturer at the University of Oxford after completing a Msc (econ) and doctoral research at the London School of Economics. He has been the Chief Investment Officer at both a major global bank and several investment vehicles.
